This month we're talking everything Oak. Here at Burgess Reclamation we're passionate about sourcing high quality 100% solid oak products. That's why we boast of our solid oak free standing kitchen units, every piece is made from oak, from the base of the unit to the internal shelves to the oak worktops themselves. This is because we truly believe that high quality, long lasting products start with high quality materials.
We've been working hard over the past couple months on our website, specifically focusing on our solid oak worktops to make it more user friendly and informative. Below we've compiled just a few facts about oak and our oak worktops...
The Material Itself
So why choose oak? Oak is a hardwood, which is wood from an angiosperm tree. Angiosperm trees are often defined as trees which produce seeds and/or flowers inside a capsule or ovary...and in the case of the oak, they produce acorns. Hardwoods are often derived from broad-leaved trees. As the name suggests, hardwoods tend to be more resilient and durable when compared to softwood.
The beauty of using a natural product means that each one is unique. Each grain within the wood is slightly different to the one before, allowing a truly individual product.
The Production
We take pride in our worktops and take personal visits to monitor the quality of the products being produced and see for ourselves the craftsmanship of producing it. What we truly love about our worktops is that they are so versatile, from kitchen worktops, desktops or sink units.
We only use wider staves in our oak worktops. Staves are pieces of wood which are then joined together to form a worktop. Larger staves can be more desirable when purchasing a worktop as it shows less joints between each individual stave and accentuates a larger area of the unique grain of the wood.
Our solid oak worktops are finished with what's known as a 'bull nose' edge. This means the edge of the worktop has a slight curve to it.
When You Receive Your Product
All of our worktops come pre-sanded. You will simply need to lightly sand the worktop with sandpaper before giving it a light oiling.
